Sunday Snapshot: Montserrat

Nestled into the mountain top in Catalonia, Spain sits a distinct rock formation containing a Benedictine monastery.  Montserrat, the spiritual center of Catalonia, attracts pilgrims and tourists alike to experience their monastic community 30 miles outside Barcelona. The main attractions include the Basilica and La Moreneta (the statue of the Black Virgin), but once seeing those make sure you explore the rest that this unique community has to offer. A strenuous hike led me and my friends to the top of the mountain looking out over the Catalonian landscape. All visitors to Barcelona should make sure they branch out of the city to explore this unique monastic community and breathe in the mountain air.

  1. It was on the list but I chose Girona as my “out of town” instead, and loved it. 5 nights is never enough 🙂 Lovely shot!

    • Thanks, Jo! I know it can be tricky when you have to pick only one…there is never enough time to see it all! Girona is another great place. I wish I got to spend more time there!

My husband and I loved our day trip to Montserrat while visiting Barcelona. This picture captures the magnificent mountain views of Catalonia and the Montserrat mountains.
