RelayRides to Your Dream US Destination

If you could pick any destination in the United States to travel to right now, where would you pick? Any travel lovers out there know that this is a dream question, a question that we continually ask our family and friends for the pure love of hearing which destinations others pick. And more importantly, it is a question we are always hoping the other person asks back!

Recently, Emma at RelayRides asked me this question and I have to admit I was a little stumped. My US travel list grows by the day and selecting just one destination to explore with their peer-to-peer car rental service seemed daunting. As I reflected on where I have traveled and what I have done, there is a hole in my US travel – a proper road trip. I have road tripped in Ireland and most recently in Iceland, but never in the US (how sad!).

So where would this road trip take me? One of my favorite vacations years ago was to the Grand Canyon and Sedona and I am itching to get back to visit more red rock canyons and national parks. For starters, I would fly from Boston to Salt Lake City at the end of summer once people have started going back to school and work, so attractions are a little less crowded. For a road trip through the red rock canyons and Utah’s National Parks, I would need a SUV with four-wheel drive and I would not miss the chance to take it off-roading. The best way to pick up RelayRides is at the airport and the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee currently available at the Salt Lake City airport would be the obvious choice!

With only one night in Salt Lake City, I would eat dinner at Pago, as my new favorite thing to do in a city is to seek out a restaurant with the freshest farm to table ingredients. First thing in the morning, I would hit the road and head south for the first of the Big 5 of Utah’s National Parks, Zion National Park. From there I would visit Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands National Park and last, but certainly not least, Arches National Park. My days would be spent biking the White Rim Trail Road, hiking the numerous trails throughout the parks and whitewater rafting. The perfect ending to a day would be watching the sunset over one of the rock formations, knowing that the day was spent enjoying all that the national parks have to offer in terms of outdoor activity and beauty.

And lastly, who would I bring on this trip? Without a doubt the talented Max Holiver so he could help me capture photos like these.

There is nothing better than dreaming up travel destinations mid-week. Thanks to Emma at RelayRides for the nomination!

Now I want to hear from you! Where would YOU go on your dream US trip? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I’ve never been to the states but will have to soon. The wife really wants to go to New York but I’d much rather go to Texas – Dallas to San Antonio to Austin and home (if that’s the right order)!

    • You will have to visit the States soon, Richard! New York is always the big ticket item, but I like your Texas itinerary. I visited Austin last year and loved it – I am already going back in March!

    • Thanks, Patricia! Yosemite is very high on the list – I have heard great things. I will need to add it to my itnerary when I go to San Francisco. I am bound to make it there one of these days!

  5. I did a very similar route to your trip last year and it’s such a spectacular part of the country. Top of my list for my next US road trip is the Florida Keys, though I’d also love to get back to Cape Cod after working there for a summer 15 years ago.

    • I loved your photos from Utah, Lucy! I know I would love the red rock and the National Parks. The Florida Keys sound amazing. I have never made it that far south in Florida. Cape Cod is great place to road trip! It is one of my favorite places to visit and I am always finding new hidden gems, especially when you get further down the Cape!

    • It is the best time to visit, Lauren! The foliage is fantastic (and was still lasting this weekend). If you ever head this way, let me know and I can give you some travel tips!

  7. We’re planning a US road trip for next year. I’d love to see Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell but think it might be too far off our route. Need to check out your Iceland posts 🙂

    • That sounds great, Suzanne! Lake Powell is high on my list as well. I have always wanted to rent a house boat and see the spots that can only be seen from the water. Looking forward to hearing about your trip!

Great post Bridget! How funny this has been on my wanderlist for a while. I love your itinerary, but I would have to add a house boat on Lake Powell to complete this wonderful trip.

    Keep on traveling!

    • I agree, Joanie! Lake Powell would be a great addition to the itinerary. It is a great way to relax from the driving and see some spots that can only been seen from the water!

I have 3 spots I would like to see. St Augustine, FL which is only about 5 hours from me in Florida. I would like to go back to San Antonio, and maybe sneak over to Kerrville, ride along the California coastline, and a boat ride on the Riverboat Queen down the Mississippi would be nice too. So many places so little time!

    • I have heard great things about St. Augustine, Mam! It is supposed to be the most cultural city in all of Florida. Driving down the California Coast and riding the Riverboat Queen down the Mississippi are both high on my list too! The latter one reminds me of Huck Finn!

      November 2, 2014
  10. I’d love to drive down the Pacific coast!

    November 2, 2014
    • That is high on my list as well! Big Sur looks amazing and there are so many amazing places to stop on the road trip!
